10th Our ocean
Conference

Republic of Korea will Host
the 10th Our Ocean Conference
at BEXCO in Busan
From April 28 to 30, 2025.

The 10th Our Ocean Conference will
present the opening and closing
ceremonies, various side events,
and voluntary commitments.

The Republic of Korea has a coastline stretching 15,782 km, which is 37% of the Earth’s circumference, and encompasses 3,382 islands. Coastal populations make up 28.4% of the total population, the coastal economy contributes 33.8% of the GDP, and maritime logistics account for 99.7% of import and export volumes. As a country rich in marine ecological, cultural, and economic assets, the Republic of Korea boasts healthy tidal flats, such as mudflats, and various leisure and tourism attractions, including marinas and beaches.
To overcome the fragmented and functional limitations of coastal and marine management, the Korean government established the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 1996. The Ministry currently exercises comprehensive planning and implementation authority over marine and fisheries policies. By doing so, the Ministry implements specific practices for sustainable ocean development, such as systematically reducing marine waste, significantly improving marine water quality, expanding marine protected areas, promoting the decarbonization of marine and fisheries, innovating sustainable fisheries management, and realizing the blue economy based on new marine industries.

Additionally, with the successful hosting of the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, the Korean government has reinforced its marine cooperation with countries in Asia, Africa, the Pacific islands, and the Caribbean islands to fulfill its commitment to supporting the coastal and marine management capacities of developing countries.

The 10th Conference will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Our Ocean Conference and serve as an important momentum for setting specific directions for cooperation on sustainable ocean development. It will be utilized as a forum to discuss global cooperation and implementation means for agreements on the advanced future of the ocean, such as the ‘Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ)’ and the ‘UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution.’

At the 10th Our Ocean Conference, we expect to discuss innovative and inclusive initiatives based on active and effective practices for the sustainable development of the global ocean and the coexistence and prosperity of the ocean and humanity.
